62 guidesPoisonous veld plants and hay: identify the plant before feeding
When a suspected poisonous plant is mixed with grazing or hay, drying is not a reliable safety test. Stop using the suspect feed, identify the plant and speak to a veterinarian. If animals are ill, seek veterinary help promptly rather than waiting for an online identification.
Chicken manure: record nutrients, bedding and use
Chicken manure can contribute nutrients and organic matter, but one bucket is not equivalent to another. Bedding, moisture, storage and composting all change the material. Knowing its source and analysis makes it easier to use without repeatedly overfeeding a bed.
Poultry bedding: keep deep litter dry and workable
Bedding in a poultry house should give birds a dry, comfortable surface. A deep-litter approach needs regular observation, adequate ventilation and prompt correction of wet patches. It is not simply a reason to keep adding material over an unmanaged floor.
Crickets for feed: begin with a small contained trial
Raising insects for poultry or fish feed can be interesting, but a living colony requires management and a reliable market or use. Start by testing survival, labour and feed costs before building a large production room.
Termites as poultry feed: local observation and a cautious trial
Chickens readily investigate many insects, including termites. That observation does not make termite collection a complete feeding system. Consider species, contamination, habitat and the value of the insects in the soil before encouraging or harvesting them.
Cactus fodder: identify the plant before feeding it
Known fodder cactus can be useful in a dryland feeding plan, but “a cactus” is not a feed identification. Start with the species, cultivar and animal. An animal eating a small piece does not prove that an unfamiliar plant is safe.
Cactus pads: keep useful establishment records
A small, labelled cactus planting can answer a useful question: which known planting material establishes reliably on your site? Keep the identity, purpose and source attached to each plant from the beginning. A fruit colour or familiar name alone does not tell you how it will perform as fodder.
Cactus drip irrigation: turn operating time into litres
An irrigation schedule becomes useful when it states how much water reaches the planting. “Once a month” leaves out the flow, duration and number of emitters. Convert your own system into litres, then check where that water goes in the soil.
Black soldier fly larvae: record the feedstock and harvest
Black soldier fly production is easier to evaluate when incoming material and harvested larvae are measured. A successful demonstration is not enough to establish feed safety or a viable business. Start with traceable material, competent guidance and a small unit whose daily work you can manage.
Tilapia feed: keep the bag label and measure the ration
A feed bag is more useful when its label becomes part of your fish records. Species, fish size, feed formulation and storage all matter. Avoid buying a large quantity merely because it is called fish feed or appeared in another farmer’s photograph.
Prepare a pond before stocking catfish
Prepare the water, treatment system and daily care routine before buying fish. A pond that looks clean may still be unsuitable. Establish the species, stocking plan and a way to measure essential water conditions with a competent aquaculture adviser.
Choose crops for a recirculating growing system
Recirculating water can be useful, but the crop still needs light, nutrients, space and care. Choose a crop to fit the system you can maintain. Start by distinguishing aquaponics, which includes fish and biological treatment, from hydroponics supplied with a formulated nutrient solution.
